Pentingnya Lapisan Ozon Bagi Bumi Kita

Bumi dilindungi oleh selubung udara yang disebut atmosfer. Ketebalan atmosfer beberapa ratus kilometer dan tidak memiliki batas yang jelas. Atmosfer terdiri dari atas beberapa lapis.Lapisan tersebut berturut-turut dari bawah adalah troposfer, stratosfer,mesosfer,termosfer, ionosfer, dan eksosfer. Dengan adanya selubung atmosfer, bumi terhindar dari hujan meteor. Atmosfer juga melindungi bumi dari berbagai radiasi matahari yangg berbahaya. Salah satunya adalah sinar UV. Sinar UV sangat berbahaya karena dapat mengahancurkan bahan genetik dalam sel-sel hidup. Sinar UV mematikan mikroorganisme, membuat tanaman pangan layu, dan memperbesar kemungkinan manusia terkena kenker kulit. Dapat dikatakan sinar UV dapat mengancurkan kehidupan dibumi. Tetapi, bumi masih ada kehidupan karena di dalam atmosfer, pada ketinggian antara 10-55 km terdapat lapisan ozon. Meskipun tipis, tetapi lapisan ini sangat penting bagi bumi.

Pembentukan ozon paling banyak terjadi diatas khatulistiwa pada ketinggian 30 km. Proses terbentuknya ozon bermula dari sinar UV yang menguraikan molekul oksigen(O₂) menjadi dua atom oksigen(O) bebas. Atom oksigen ini akan bergabung dengan molekul oksigen (O₂) dan membentuk ozon(O₃). Ozon inilah yang bertugas menyerap sinar UV yang berbahaya itu sehingga sinar UV yang lolos ke bumi tidak terlalu membahayakan kehidupan. Proses penyerapan sinar UV ini menyebabkan ozon terurai menjadi atom oksigen (O₂) dan molekul oksigen(O₃). Secara alamiah proses pembentukan ozon dan hancurnya ozon berlangsung secara teratur. Ozon dbawa oleh arus strarosfer ke arah kutub. Akibatnya,konsentrasi ozon paling tinggi ditemukan pada ketinggian ± 18 km diatas kutub.

Pada pertengahan tahun 1980-an, para ahli menemukan bahwa ozon diatas kutub selatan telah sangat berkurang. Data dari satelit menunjukkan bahwa lubang ozon yang sedang terbentuk dan makin lama makin besar. Para ahli berkeyakinan bahwa penyebabnya adalah CFC(klorofluorokarbon) yang antara lain digunakan pada lemari es, AC, dan gas penyemprot bermacam-macam kosmetik. Mulai tahun 2000 berlaku larangan global terhadap produksi CFC. Proses rusaknya ozon oleh CFC adalah sebagai berikut. Setelah mencapai stratosfer, CFC dipecah oleh sinar UV dan menghasilkan klorin(Cl). Cl akan mengikat satu atom oksigen dari oksigen sehingga menghancurkannya dan menghasilkan klorin monoksida (ClO). Atom oksigen dalam ClO tertarik oleh atom oksigen bebas  dan menghasilkan O₂ serta meninggalkan klorin bebas yang akan menghancurkan ozon.

Kalau penggunaan CFC tidak dihentikan, suatu saat  lapisan ozon akan hancur dan bukan tidak mungkin susatu saat bumi tidak ada kehidupan lagi.
